Smith has missed four consecutive practices due to knee and hip injuries sustained earlier in the week. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, recent tests showed no significant damage. Macdonald mentioned that Smith would undergo additional testing later that day but expressed cautious optimism about his recovery.

“I think he’s good,” Macdonald said. “We’re still working through it, but it looks promising. I’m hopeful we’ll see him back next week.”

In Smith’s absence, backup quarterback Sam Howell, 23, took the reins with the first-string offense during Saturday’s practice, while P.J. Walker led the second-team unit.

Macdonald noted, “It’s great to see Sam get a chance with the first team. Our offense looked like it should, but I’m eager to get Geno back as well. This opportunity for Sam to work with the first team, rather than with the second team, is valuable.”
