Johnson’s role on the team is significant, having accumulated over 2,500 career rushing yards and leading the Gators in rushing for the past two seasons, each time surpassing 800 yards. His outstanding performances earned him second-team All-SEC honors this year, highlighting his vital contribution.
As the season opener against Miami on August 31st approaches, the Gators may need to revise their strategy.
The Florida Gators have RB Montrell Johnson now listed as “week-to-week”.

In Johnson’s absence, sophomore Treyaun Webb is expected to take on the starting role. Webb showed promise last season with 163 rushing yards on 26 attempts and two touchdowns, along with versatility through four receptions for 18 yards.
Webb has expressed enthusiasm about this opportunity, stating his intention to make the most of it. His readiness could be beneficial for the Gators as they adjust to this unexpected situation.
The running back roster also includes freshmen Kahnen Daniels and Jadan Baugh, both of whom have impressed running backs coach Jabbar Juluke with their potential. Additionally, veteran Cam Carroll, returning from an ACL injury, may offer experienced depth if he is fully recovered.
Although Johnson’s injury is a concern, it is not deemed season-ending, and there is hope he could return for the opener or soon after. In the meantime, this situation provides a chance for the younger backs to step up and potentially bring new elements to the Gators’ offense.
