A recent report indicates that the Golden State Warriors are considering abandoning their plan to pursue a star player this summer.
After a disappointing end to the 2023-24 NBA season, it was anticipated that the Warriors would make significant changes to their roster. This process began with Klay Thompson departing to join the Mavericks and continued with the addition of veterans De’Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson, and Buddy Hield.
In recent weeks, the Warriors were rumored to be interested in a trade for Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen. However, this prospect now appears less likely, as The Athletic reported that Markkanen is expected to sign an extension with the Jazz.
As a result, the Warriors are shifting their focus and plan to pursue smaller-scale trades more actively in the coming months instead of aiming for a blockbuster deal.
Will the Golden State Warriors keep their options open for a blockbuster trade this summer?
As summer began and through July, there were rumors that the Warriors were looking to add an All-Star player to their roster, with early reports suggesting they might pursue former star Kevin Durant.
Now that August has arrived and Markkanen is no longer available, the top targets appear to be Brandon Ingram and Zach LaVine, both of whom could make a significant impact on the Warriors. However, could Golden State still pursue either player before the season starts?
According to the same Athletic report that discussed a shift to smaller-scale moves, the Warriors have shown little interest in major trades for LaVine or Ingram. Instead, a more likely move might involve Jonas Valanciunas, the recently signed center from the Wizards, with whom the team has been recently linked in trade discussions.
