Tom Izzo has been making some excellent hires for Michigan State basketball, and that includes the graduate assistants.
Izzo recently brought on Cassius Winston’s brother as an assistant, secured Saddi Washington, and now has added former Oakland star Blake Lampman as a graduate assistant. The announcement came on Tuesday afternoon.
Lampman spent the last five years playing under Izzo’s close friend Greg Kampe at Oakland, where he amassed over 1,000 career points and shot 33 percent from beyond the arc. He played a key role in leading the Golden Grizzlies on a remarkable run in this year’s NCAA Tournament, marking the most successful postseason in the program’s history.

Adding someone with recent playing experience to the staff is a great move, especially someone who can relate to the current players and offer insight into improving their three-point shooting. Although Lampman’s career shooting percentage from three-point range was 33 percent, he excelled in his final season, hitting 36 percent of his attempts and taking 8.5 shots per game. Michigan State had to keep a close watch on him because of his potential to heat up from deep; he went 4-for-10 from long range against the Spartans last season.
With Lampman joining the staff alongside Washington, who is expected to focus on the big men, Izzo is building a strong and dynamic coaching team. The upcoming 2024-25 season is looking increasingly promising!
