Michigan State football has a storied tradition of producing successful NFL players, especially at the quarterback position, with Kirk Cousins currently leading the way.
However, another former Spartan quarterback, Nick Foles, has recently decided to retire from football. While Foles may not be the first quarterback that comes to mind when considering Michigan State’s NFL alumni, he did spend a brief period with the Spartans. He joined the team out of high school and played one season in 2007, appearing in just one game where he completed 5 of 8 passes for 57 yards.

It’s worth noting how remarkable the Michigan State quarterback situation was in 2007. Alongside Foles, both Brian Hoyer and Kirk Cousins were also on the roster, making it a rare occurrence to have three future NFL quarterbacks on the same college team.
Following his season at Michigan State, Foles transferred to Arizona, where he enjoyed significant success and was later drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012. Although Foles’ NFL career was largely spent as a backup, he is remembered for his standout performance in the 2017 playoffs. After Carson Wentz, the Eagles’ starting quarterback, was injured, Foles took over and led Philadelphia through the playoffs to a Super Bowl victory, earning Super Bowl MVP honors in the process.
Despite his brief stint at Michigan State, I’ve always considered Foles a Spartan. His 11-year NFL career, highlighted by that unforgettable playoff run with the Eagles, has left a lasting impression on football fans.
