Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Nick Foles has announced his retirement from professional football. The Super Bowl MVP, known for his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, will formally retire as an Eagle during their home opener against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2.
At 35 years old, Foles hasn’t played since the 2022 season with the Colts, where he spent just one year in a backup role. His performance during that season was lackluster, completing 25 of 42 passes (59.5%) for 224 yards, with no touchdowns and four interceptions over three games, including two starts.
Foles’s stint with the Colts was largely forgettable, marred by playing on a struggling team and not showing the form that once made him a Pro Bowler. One notable moment from his Colts tenure came in Week 17 of 2023, when he was sacked and injured by the New York Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux, who celebrated and seemed to mock Foles as the Colts’ offensive line failed to respond during a heavy loss.
Foles joined the Colts to back up and mentor with his Super Bowl experience, reuniting with former Colts head coach Frank Reich. Despite his pedigree, he saw limited starting opportunities and struggled to recapture his previous form before being injured and benched again.
Foles will always be celebrated for his remarkable 2017 season with the Eagles, where he stepped in as the starting quarterback for the injured Carson Wentz and led Philadelphia to a Super Bowl victory, earning MVP honors for his stellar performance.
While his time with the Colts didn’t go as planned, Foles’s legacy will be defined by his unforgettable Super Bowl LII triumph against the New England Patriots.
