Florida Gators quarterback has silenced his critics

For the 2024 season, Florida Football is undergoing significant changes, but Graham Mertz will remain a key fixture from last year. After an impressive 2023 campaign, Mertz is poised to advance further this season.

In 2023, Mertz delivered a standout performance, setting personal records with 2,903 passing yards and 20 touchdowns in 11 games, while only throwing three interceptions. His 72.9% completion rate was the third highest among FBS quarterbacks with at least 250 completions. Notably, Mertz established a Florida record with 239 consecutive passes without an interception, highlighting his improved decision-making and ball security. He also matched for second in UF history with an 83.3% completion rate in two games.

Head coach Billy Napier has emphasized Mertz’s significance to the team, calling his decision to return the “biggest, No. 1 storyline” and a crucial factor for the team’s prospects. This endorsement reflects the high expectations for Mertz’s leadership in the upcoming season.

Despite his strong performance last year, Mertz faces skepticism, with some preseason SEC quarterback rankings placing him lower than other highly-touted prospects.

Florida QB Graham Mertz 'in the flow,' not missing throws

In 2024, Mertz aims to enhance his game by generating more explosive plays. Last season, only 39 of his 358 attempts gained 20 yards or more, with 16 completions. His average depth of target (ADOT) was 6.8 yards, roughly three yards less than top-tier quarterbacks. Mertz has acknowledged this and has been working on taking more “calculated risks” during spring practice, as Coach Napier described.

The Gators’ offensive success in 2024 will largely depend on Mertz’s ongoing development and leadership. With improvements to the offensive line and a skilled group of playmakers, Mertz will have the chance to showcase his arm strength and decision-making skills.
