The New York Knicks are still searching for another center to fill the gap left by Isaiah Hartenstein’s exit in free agency. Currently, Mitchell Robinson is set to be the starting center, with Precious Achiuwa likely serving as a backup in the frontcourt. However, the team aims to add additional depth and size at the center position with their remaining roster spot.
Among the potential candidates, Nance Jr. appears to be a strong fit, especially considering his uncertain role with the Atlanta Hawks. Nance was acquired by the Hawks in the trade that sent Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans. As he enters his 10th NBA season, the 31-year-old was effective as a bench player for the Pelicans last year, averaging 5.7 points and 5.0 rebounds in 61 games.
Nance could provide the Knicks with valuable size for their second unit and bolster center depth in case of injuries to Robinson or Achiuwa. He might also earn some playing time to offer rest to other players. Acquiring him seems sensible given his expiring $11 million contract and the limited playing time he is expected to receive behind Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu in Atlanta. While the situation in New York would be somewhat similar, Nance would likely find more opportunities due to the Knicks’ need for additional size in their second unit.
