Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran issued an apology on Sunday for using a homophobic slur directed at a fan during the team’s 10-2 defeat to the Houston Astros at Fenway Park. He described the term as a “truly horrific word.”
In his statement, Duran said, “During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word in response to a fan,” as reported by Chris Cotillo. “I am deeply sorry for offending and disappointing so many people. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization and, more importantly, to the LGBTQ community. Young fans should be able to see me as a role model, but I fell short of that expectation tonight. I will take this chance to educate myself and my teammates and work on personal growth.”
The incident occurred during Duran’s at-bat in the sixth inning against Astros pitcher Hunter Brown. He responded to a heckling fan by telling him to “shut up” and then used the slur, an exchange that was clearly captured on the NESN broadcast.

The Red Sox also addressed Duran’s use of the slur in their statement, outlining their response to the incident.
“The Red Sox addressed this situation with Jarren immediately after today’s game,” the team stated, according to Cotillo. “We support Jarren’s apology to our fans, particularly the LGBTQ community. Our goal is to be an organization that welcomes everyone at Fenway Park, and we are committed to continuing education on the importance of inclusivity for our employees, players, coaches, and staff.”
The Red Sox’s statement did not mention any potential disciplinary actions for Duran. In the past, some teams have suspended players for using slurs. It will be important to follow further reports to see how the Red Sox and MLB manage this situation.
