These are not the same Minnesota Timberwolves of the past. The team that once lingered at the bottom of the Western Conference and was the subject of mockery from other NBA fans is now a serious championship contender.
Many teams in the league would love to be in the Timberwolves’ current position. Through a meticulous team-building process, Minnesota has created a top-tier roster centered around Anthony Edwards and has become one of the league’s most prominent teams.
For years, even after Edwards joined the team, Wolves fans have wondered when national media would start recognizing their team’s potential. It’s clear that moment has arrived. Minnesota has steadily built its reputation with the league and media partners as a major contender, with the latest proof of this coming on Monday morning.
Timberwolves will play the Lakers on opening night
Shams Charania reported on Monday that the NBA’s opening night schedule has been set. According to the top insider, the Timberwolves are slated to be one of four teams featured in the two prime-time opening night games. Minnesota will head to Los Angeles to face the Lakers.
This game will be the second of a two-game slate that kicks off with the Boston Celtics hosting the New York Knicks on ring ceremony night. This is a significant moment for Minnesota.
Just a few days after being selected for a Christmas Day game for only the third time, the Timberwolves will also be part of the NBA’s inaugural night of the 2024-25 season. Following the two games on Tuesday, October 22, the remaining 26 teams will take the court on Wednesday, October 23.
The Timberwolves are clearly seen as a must-watch team by the league. While fans in Minnesota have long felt this way, it’s gratifying to see the NBA and national media beginning to acknowledge the excitement building in the Twin Cities.
