The Texas Longhorns faced a significant setback last week when starting running back CJ Baxter was lost for the season due to a torn LCL and PCL in his right knee. This injury came as a major blow to the team, which had one of the nation’s top-rated running back units.
The situation worsened on Monday when freshman running back Christian Clark reportedly sustained a severe lower-leg injury. In response, head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff are exploring options to address the depth issue, including possibly shifting players from other positions to running back.
Sarkisian mentioned, “We’re considering various options and taking a creative approach, whether it involves players from the offensive side, or even from the defensive side. We’re evaluating the impact on both the running game and other positions day by day.”
One potential solution reported by Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods involves moving freshman wide receiver Ryan Niblett to running back. Niblett, a four-star recruit from Aldine Eisenhower in Houston, has a diverse skill set demonstrated in high school, where he excelled in multiple roles, including as a receiver, rusher, and even as a returner and quarterback.
Despite Niblett’s versatility, there are other candidates being considered as well. The team has a promising group of running backs in Jaydon Blue, Tre Wisner, and Jerrick Gibson, with possible consideration for walk-on Collin Page. However, this group lacks the physicality of Baxter and Clark.
Some candidates for the position could include:
– **Linebacker Derion Gullette**: A former four-star recruit who excelled on both sides of the ball in high school, including at linebacker, wide receiver, and punter. The Longhorns have depth at linebacker, making him a viable option.
– **Safety Jelani McDonald**: A four-star recruit who was a standout offensive player in high school, with strong rushing statistics and a versatile skill set. His size and power could benefit the run game.
– **Freshman linebacker TyAnthony Smith**: Known for his all-purpose ability and physical play in high school, Smith could be an asset in short-yardage situations.
– **Tight end Juan Davis**: With experience as a high school quarterback, Davis brings additional running capability.
Overall, while various players are being considered for the running back position, the primary focus will likely remain on Blue, Gibson, and Wisner to handle most of the workload.
