Kayli Johnson breaks down her role with Michigan football as Director of On-Campus Recruiting

A key addition was Kayli Johnson, the sister of All-American cornerback Will Johnson, who transitioned from Michigan State to become the Wolverines’ Director of On-Campus Recruiting.

In her role, Johnson handles all aspects of recruiting visits. As she explained on a recent episode of “Behind The Uniform” with The Michigan Insider, her responsibilities include managing flights for official visits, transportation, meals, and everything related to both official visits in June and unofficial visits throughout the year. “Recruiting never stops,” Johnson noted. “I’m responsible for organizing schedules, making plans, and coordinating with everyone involved.”

Though the position itself is not new, Moore’s approach has expanded the department significantly. He not only hired Johnson from Michigan State but also increased the recruiting staff by adding ten analysts and two assistant directors.

Johnson appreciates these additions, as they provide crucial support during high-traffic periods, such as major events like the Big House Barbecue. “Having extra help means we can focus on building meaningful connections with recruits and their families,” she said. “A lot of recruiting is about forming relationships and presenting our program authentically in a short amount of time.”

She also emphasized the importance of being present and supportive, even beyond the organizational aspects of her job. “Sometimes it’s about being there for recruits in a more personal, almost motherly way, rather than just focusing on selling the football program.”

Will Johnson added that Kayli and her team help demonstrate that Michigan’s staff are approachable and trustworthy, making it easier for families to feel comfortable leaving their children in their care.

The increased staff in the recruiting department also benefits Michigan’s coaches. Offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell noted that the added personnel assist with interacting with recruits and their families, managing campus tours, and other activities, making the whole process smoother.
