The preseason college football AP Poll was released on Monday, and, as expected, Michigan State football didn’t make the list. While this poll typically generates excitement as fans anticipate the national media’s take on the Spartans’ upcoming season, this year’s edition doesn’t include them.
However, several college football analysts compile their own rankings beyond the top 25. Some go as far as ranking all 134 FBS teams, as RJ Young from FOX did. His ranking of Michigan State, though, is notably disrespectful.
Did @RJ_Young really rank all 134 FBS teams ahead of the season? Yes, yes he did 🙌📝

While there have been other instances of media undervaluing MSU, Young’s ranking stands out. According to the graphic, he has Michigan State at No. 82. It’s understandable that MSU may not be a top 25 team, but placing them at No. 82 seems not only disrespectful but indicative of a lack of research.
The focus seems to be excessively on last year’s struggles, ignoring that this season’s team is significantly different. With a new coaching staff and many new players, including several impact transfers like Aidan Chiles, Jack Velling, Tanner Miller, Jalen Satchell, and Wayne Matthews III, Michigan State is poised to be much improved.
Interestingly, Young’s rankings still place Oregon State and Old Dominion, from which these impactful transfers came, above Michigan State. These transfers were key players for their previous teams, suggesting that Young’s rankings are misplaced.
While other teams might also be questioned for ranking above MSU, the focus now is on the upcoming season. There’s confidence that Michigan State will prove those like Young, who don’t see them in the top 80, wrong.
