BREAKING: Wolves likely to unload Karl-Anthony Towns or Rudy Gobert, to try and bring in KD

Following his gold medal win at the 2024 Olympics, Anthony Edwards can now shift his attention back to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Although there was speculation about potential roster changes this offseason, it seems things will largely remain the same.

It also appears that any speculation about Edwards pushing for a Kevin Durant acquisition before training camp may not be accurate. It’s well known that Edwards is a fan of Durant, especially after their intense matchups during the Western Conference playoffs last season. Fans and media quickly began to wonder if the two might team up for the 2024-25 season.

However, according to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, it’s unlikely that the Timberwolves will trade Karl-Anthony Towns or Rudy Gobert to make room for Durant anytime soon.

Anthony Edwards and Durant became fast friends who were dynamic together in Team USA’s second unit, so does that mean the 23-year-old Minnesota Timberwolves star might find a way to persuade his favorite player to force a trade to his (frigid) part of the country? Don’t count on it — from either side. After Minnesota’s run to the Western Conference finals last season, and with Edwards’ star on a meteoric rise, it’s so-far-so-good for him with his current core.

Sam Amick on Kevin Durant joining Anthony Edwards

While the idea of Kevin Durant joining the Timberwolves might seem exciting and potentially effective, it doesn’t seem practical at the moment. Not only would it be financially challenging to make the move happen, but the Timberwolves already have a well-integrated team, and the Suns have bolstered their roster as well. Plus, Durant is unlikely to be eager to move from sunny Phoenix to cold Minneapolis during the winter.

Durant could join Edwards and Minnesota Timberwolves down the line

At just 23 years old and coming off a season where he received his first MVP votes, Anthony Edwards will continue to play alongside Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert for the Timberwolves this season.

It appears unlikely that Edwards will be moving to Phoenix to join Devin Booker, as a trade for Kevin Durant doesn’t seem feasible for the Timberwolves right now. However, things could always change in the future.

The NBA has become a league where veteran players often seek championships. Kevin Durant demonstrated this when he teamed up with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson on the Warriors.

With several years still ahead in his career, Durant could potentially follow a similar path to LeBron James, considering a future title run alongside Anthony Edwards as he develops. A pairing of Edwards and Durant could be highly dynamic both on and off the court.
