According to SNY’s Ian Begley, New York Knicks key players Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson are at risk of missing the start of training camp.
Randle is slated for re-evaluation in September, but Begley suggests that, given typical recovery timelines for shoulder surgery, it would be surprising if Randle is ready for the beginning of camp. However, Begley also notes that if recovery progresses well, Randle could return for the Knicks’ season opener against the defending champion Boston Celtics on October 22.
Randle dislocated his right shoulder on January 27 during a game against the Miami Heat. Initially hoping to avoid surgery and return through rehab, Randle eventually had to undergo a season-ending operation in April. Despite his absence, the Knicks made it to the second round of the NBA Playoffs and pushed the Indiana Pacers to seven games.
Meanwhile, Robinson has not yet been cleared for high-intensity weight-bearing activities in his rehabilitation, with about five weeks remaining before training camp. Begley reports that Robinson still has several hurdles to clear before he can fully participate in camp.
Robinson, who missed 50 regular-season games, re-injured his left ankle during the Knicks’ second-round playoff loss to the Pacers and had another surgery in mid-May. With Isaiah Hartenstein’s departure to the Oklahoma City Thunder on a three-year, $87 million deal, Robinson will play a crucial role for the Knicks this season.
