The Texas Longhorns have faced another setback as running back Christian Clark, a true freshman, suffered a non-contact ankle injury during Monday’s practice, which was later diagnosed as a torn Achilles tendon. Christian Clark is set to undergo season-ending surgery, making him the second running back in just six days to be sidelined for the season.
Prior to Christian Clark’s injury, the team had already announced that expected RB1 CJ Baxter would also miss the rest of the season due to a PCL and LCL injury, requiring similar surgery.
With both of these key players out, the depth at running back for Texas Longhorn is thinning rapidly. Jaydon Blue is now anticipated to step up as the starting running back, supported by just two other backs: sophomore Quintrevion Wisner and freshman Jerrick Gibson.
Texas Longhorn quarterback Quinn Ewers acknowledged the impact of these injuries but expressed confidence in the remaining players, stating that they are capable of filling the void. Ewers, though not typically a primary rusher, mentioned he is prepared to take on additional running responsibilities if needed.
Despite Texas Longhorn’s history of top-tier running backs, including recent standout Bijan Robinson now with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, the team must address the recurring injuries. The effectiveness of their strength and conditioning program may come under scrutiny as they navigate these challenges. Only time will reveal how the team adapts and who steps up to fill the gaps left by these injuries.
