The New York Yankees received some positive news regarding Jazz Chisholm Jr., though no specific timetable for his return to the lineup has been set.
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, multiple doctors have recommended “rest and rehab” for the third baseman’s UCL injury. The Yankees remain hopeful that Chisholm will play again this season. Chisholm injured his elbow during a headfirst slide into home plate on Monday in a loss to the White Sox. Although he initially felt optimistic about his arm that evening, an MRI the next day revealed a UCL injury, which will likely sideline him for a while.
Dr. Jesse Morse, a sports and family medicine specialist, echoed the optimism about Chisholm’s potential return but warned that he is at “high risk” for a full UCL tear.
“He received fantastic news that the tear wasn’t full thickness, likely more of a sprain, and he may be able to return in September,” Morse wrote on X. “It sounds like a grade 2 sprain rather than a full tear. I personally would have suggested at least PRP injections, if not stem cells. There’s still a high risk for a full tear, but overall, it’s great news that he should be able to contribute to the playoff push. He might consider surgery, either Tommy John or primary repair, during the offseason to be fully healthy by 2025.”
Chisholm, acquired at the trade deadline, has made a significant impact in the Yankees’ lineup, hitting seven of his 20 home runs in just 14 games. He boasts a .316 average and a 189 OPS+ with New York, and a .257 average with a .110 OPS+ on the season overall.
