The Cleveland Browns have four quarterbacks on their roster, each of whom could potentially make an impact on another team. Deshaun Watson is locked in as the starter, with Jameis Winston appearing to be the clear No. 2. However, the battle for the No. 3 spot between Tyler Huntley and Dorian Thompson-Robinson could be resolved through a trade.
With J.J. McCarthy’s season-ending injury, the Minnesota Vikings might be in the market for a backup quarterback. Huntley or Thompson-Robinson could fill that need. The Browns and Vikings are holding joint practices before their preseason game on August 19, giving Minnesota a chance to evaluate both backup QBs.
Cole McDaniel of Sports Illustrated floated the idea of Huntley being traded to the Vikings, noting that he’s likely the “odd man out.”
“Huntley was an intriguing pickup for Cleveland this offseason after spending four years as Lamar Jackson’s backup in Baltimore,” McDaniel wrote on August 16. “Even though the Browns might not need him during the regular season, Huntley was valuable in the offseason. As Deshaun Watson recovered from his shoulder injury, Winston and Huntley handled most of the reps.
“With the regular season approaching, Huntley appears to be the odd man out. The good news for Huntley is that a quarterback-needy team is getting a close look at him this week. Unless the Vikings make a surprising major trade for a starting QB, they’ll need a solid backup for Sam Darnold.”
