Four people lost their lives, and several others were injured on Thursday in a series of accidents on the Ohio Turnpike, according to the State Highway Patrol. The crashes involved multiple trucks, including one that spilled sulfuric acid.
Traffic on the busy route, which serves as Interstate 80 and links Chicago to the East Coast, was halted for several hours in both directions.
The first accident occurred in the eastbound lanes west of Toledo and involved a truck carrying sulfuric acid and a passenger vehicle, resulting in two fatalities. Emergency crews established a 150-foot (46-meter) perimeter around the acid spill.
A second accident, involving four commercial vehicles and a passenger car, occurred as traffic was backing up, resulting in another fatality.
Less than an hour later, a third crash on the westbound side of the turnpike claimed another life, according to the patrol.
Authorities reported that at least 10 people were transported to hospitals. The identities of the four deceased have not yet been released.
A total of 12 vehicles were involved in the crashes, according to CBS affiliate WTOL-TV.
