BREAKING NEWS: Seahawks prominent star officially sign new contract before Week 1

The Seattle Seahawks are heading into the 2024 NFL season with considerable expectations, despite having a new head coach. As the team gears up for Week 1, there are more uncertainties surrounding the defense compared to the offense, though recent Seahawks updates are focused on the offensive side.

At Seahawks training camp, second-year wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been impressive under offensive coordinator Ryann Grubb, while veteran receiver Tyler Lockett is sidelined with a leg injury. As Smith-Njigba aims to climb the depth chart, other developments are unfolding behind the scenes.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network revealed on Jason Puckett’s podcast that Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has discussed a new contract with the team’s front office. While a new deal isn’t imminent, there’s hope it could be finalized before the season starts.

The Seahawks, however, do not see extending Smith’s contract as urgent. He is under contract for the next two seasons, and his cap hit in 2025 is manageable by current quarterback standards. Smith, on the other hand, is seeking a long-term deal that would elevate him among the highest-paid NFL players in 2024.

Seattle may consider a multi-year extension to distribute the $38.5 million cap hit for 2025, but this would also mean extending Smith’s contract further. Given that he will be 35 next year, the team might opt to have Smith complete his existing deal while they search for his future replacement over the coming year.
