BREAKING NEWS: Michigan State football QB loses starting battle at East Carolina

While a few former Michigan State football quarterbacks will be starting in Week 1 of the 2024 season, Katin Houser will enter as QB2.

Despite a tough offseason competition, Houser fell short against Jake Garcia for the starting role. Although East Carolina brought Houser in to vie for the top spot, Garcia, a former top-50 recruit in the 2021 class, proved to be a formidable opponent.

Ranked 48th overall and 8th among quarterbacks in 2021, Garcia was anticipated to excel at the collegiate level. However, his time at Miami didn’t meet expectations, and he spent 2023 as a backup at Missouri.

Michigan State's Katin Houser runs for a gain against Nebraska during the second quarter on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

In 2024, Garcia edged out Houser for the starting position, but the competition may continue throughout the season. If Garcia struggles, Houser could get a chance to start and potentially become the fourth former Michigan State football quarterback to take the field this year, joining Sam Leavitt (Arizona State), Payton Thorne (Auburn), and Noah Kim (pending decision at Coastal Carolina).

Houser was a fan favorite during his brief time at East Lansing, and although he’s transferred, many supporters in East Lansing will still be cheering for him. However, his opportunity to shine will have to wait until after Week 1.
