BREAKING NEWS: San Francisco 49ers officially confirm the signing of top star DT on a stunning deal

Each week, Bleacher Report’s scouting team identifies the biggest weaknesses for each NFL team. For the 49ers, their primary concern is left guard, but they suggest that signing former Green Bay Packers All-Pro David Bakhtiari could be a significant boost to the offensive line’s depth.

With Trent Williams still holding out of training camp, Jaylon Moore is currently the 49ers’ starting left tackle, despite having only seven starts in three seasons.

The team might consider adding a veteran for added security in case Williams’ holdout extends into the regular season.

Bakhtiari, although plagued by injuries in recent years, could provide valuable experience if his medical evaluations are satisfactory. As a former first-team All-Pro, he could be a solid option at left tackle if needed. Moreover, his connection to San Mateo, CA, where he’s from, could make him more inclined to play for his hometown team.

However, Bakhtiari’s recent track record includes just 13 games played over the last three years due to knee issues and surgeries. The Packers released him this offseason to avoid a $40 million cap hit for 2024.

The key issue is whether Bakhtiari is healthy enough for the 2024 season. He has repeatedly assured that he is.

A potential challenge is that Bakhtiari wants to start wherever he goes. With Williams likely to resume his position at left tackle once his holdout ends, Bakhtiari would need to accept a role as a backup or right tackle, though he prefers to play left tackle.

If Bakhtiari is open to a reserve role as a swing tackle, he could be a high-reward, low-cost addition, given his injury history. This would likely result in a contract at or near the league minimum, possibly with performance-based incentives.
