BREAKING NEWS: Cornhuskers veteran star sudden retirement amid health issues

On Monday, former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy announced his retirement from professional football and will transition immediately into a broadcasting role with NBC, where he will cover Big Ten college football. McCoy, who was drafted in the third round by the Cleveland Browns in 2010, had a storied college career at Texas, setting numerous records and earning accolades such as the Walter Camp National Player of the Year in 2009 and finishing as a runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.

Throughout his 14-year NFL career, McCoy played for several teams: the Browns (2010-2012), San Francisco (2013), Washington (2014-2019), the New York Giants (2020), and the Arizona Cardinals (2021-2023). He earned $26.5 million, mostly as a backup quarterback, and started 36 games, with an 11-25 record.

McCoy will work as a game analyst and contribute to NBC’s Big Ten College Countdown studio show. His debut will be alongside Paul Burmeister and Kathryn Tapper for the Big Ten Saturday Night game between Colorado and Nebraska on September 7, as reported by Awful Announcing.

Reflecting on his new role, McCoy expressed his excitement, stating, “College football has always held a special place in my heart. With the expansion of the Big Ten and a new era of college football, it is the perfect time to join NBC Sports. I can’t wait to share in the passion, excitement, and competitive spirit every week!”

McCoy’s time at Texas is legendary. Despite being a less touted recruit, McCoy excelled, setting 47 school records and finishing his career with a 45-8 record as a starter. His No. 12 jersey was retired in 2010, and his single-season completion percentage of 76.67% set an NCAA record that stood until 2020.

In 2008, he set the record for touchdown passes in a season and led in rushing, although he lost the Heisman Trophy to Sam Bradford. A narrow loss to Texas Tech and a close Big 12 tiebreaker prevented Texas from playing for the national championship that year. In 2009, McCoy earned numerous awards and led Texas to an undefeated season and a BCS National Championship Game appearance, but was injured early in the game against Alabama, which ended in a loss.
