Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Tyler Steen is at the heart of a compelling and plausible trade proposal that’s been gaining attention.
Given the Eagles’ well-known need for a WR3 to complement A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, Jimmy Kempski of The Philly Voice suggested an intriguing player-for-player trade: The Eagles could send Steen to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for third-year wide receiver Alec Pierce.
“Pierce was a second-round pick by the Colts in 2022, selected for his impressive combination of size and athleticism,” Kempski wrote on August 21.
Kempski also pointed out that Pierce’s role last season was similar to Quez Watkins’ role for the Eagles, but Pierce capitalized on more of his opportunities.
This proposal could be beneficial for both teams, so let’s take a closer look.
Would the Philadelphia Eagles Consider Trading OL Tyler Steen?
A third-round pick for the Eagles in the 2023 draft, Tyler Steen played in 11 games last season, starting just one. He had limited time on the field, logging only 71 offensive snaps.
At the start of training camp, Steen was the frontrunner for the starting right guard position. However, an early ankle injury sidelined him, giving free-agent acquisition Mekhi Becton a chance to shine. With only one preseason game remaining, it’s evident that Becton has overtaken Steen for the starting role.
This situation could make Steen more expendable.
“Steen lost the battle for the starting right guard job to Mekhi Becton, and the Eagles have other interior offensive line depth options like Trevor Keegan, Dylan McMahon, Brett Toth, Nick Gates, and Darian Kinnard,” noted Jimmy Kempski. He also explained why the Colts might be interested in acquiring Steen.
“Their weak spot is at right guard with Will Fries,” Kempski wrote about Indianapolis. “Steen might not be an immediate upgrade over Fries, but he likely has more potential, and Fries is in the final year of his contract. Meanwhile, Alec Pierce could be the WR4 after the Colts selected Adonai Mitchell in the second round of the 2024 draft.”
