On August 7, the Texas Longhorns received a major boost when five-star wide receiver Kaliq Lockett, the No. 2 player at his position according to 247Sports, announced his commitment to the team. Lockett, a top-five player in Texas, made the announcement live on the 247Sports YouTube channel, marking the Longhorns’ first five-star commitment of the 2025 recruiting cycle—a significant milestone given its timing.
Lockett’s commitment added to the six other Longhorns ranked in the top 200 for the 2025 class, but the team still faces challenges. Despite this win, the Longhorns have had a tough summer with several setbacks. In early July, they lost out on a potential elite wide receiver duo when No. 1 overall wide receiver Dakorien Moore committed to Oregon.
The losses continued as defensive tackle DJ Sanders chose Texas A&M on the same day as Lockett’s commitment. Additionally, five-star offensive tackle Michael Fasusi, a key target for Texas, committed to Oklahoma, while former commit Kade Phillips opted for LSU.
On a positive note, Texas did gain commitments from defensive lineman Josiah Sharma, as well as Smith Orogbo and Nick Townsend in early July. Despite these gains, the Longhorns have room for improvement. Currently ranked 14th for the 2025 class, Texas is trailing behind other top programs like Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State.
However, there’s optimism for a strong finish. Texas football general manager Brandon Harris expressed confidence in their ability to close strong, pointing to their history of successful late-season recruiting.
The Longhorns are contenders for four remaining uncommitted five-star players: safety Jonah Williams, wide receiver Jaime Ffrench, and athlete Michael Terry III. Additionally, they are vying for offensive tackle Nick Brooks, who will decide between Texas, USC, and Georgia soon. Williams will choose among LSU, Texas A&M, and Oregon, while Ffrench is set to commit in a week, and Terry has yet to announce a date.
Securing three of these four high-profile recruits could propel Texas into the top five of the 247Sports rankings, moving them ahead of several SEC teams. The Longhorns’ late recruiting push could significantly impact their standing in the 2025 class.
