Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer is aiming to return from shoulder fatigue and pitch again before the season concludes. However, he will not be taking the mound for his next scheduled game with the Rangers’ Double-A affiliate.
Scherzer was set to pitch on Friday for the Frisco Roughriders but was removed from the lineup. No official explanation has been provided for this change, as reported by Jeff Wilson from RangersToday. It’s possible that Scherzer hasn’t experienced a setback and that the decision could be related to the Rangers’ underwhelming season.
The defending World Series champions have struggled this year. They are currently in third place in the American League West, trailing the division-leading Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners. With a record of 59-69, the Rangers are 10 games behind the Astros.
The Rangers’ position in the Wild Card race is even more bleak. They are 12.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals for the second and third Wild Card spots and would need to surpass six other teams to secure the final American League playoff spot.
Scherzer, a 40-year-old veteran, has had a remarkable career marked by three Cy Young Awards and eight All-Star selections. He has also contributed to two World Series-winning teams: the 2019 Washington Nationals and the 2023 Texas Rangers.
Known for his intense demeanor and effective pitching, Scherzer’s fastball remains powerful, and his skills in pitch location and speed variation have been crucial to his success. Over his career, he has played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and the Rangers.
