If there’s one thing we’ve learned about GM Ryan Poles, it’s that he always keeps his phone lines active. Few are more willing to work the trade market than he is, regardless of the time of year. He demonstrated that again this week by trading a 6th-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for veteran pass rusher Darrell Taylor, addressing a key need for the Chicago Bears on defense. Some fans are wondering if he might make another move to add another player. However, they might want to consider the opposite—given the Bears’ newfound depth at several positions, they could potentially trade one of their own players for something in return.
One name gaining attention in trade discussions is Khalil Herbert. Although he’s been a reliable runner for the Bears over the past couple of years, his value to the team has diminished since D’Andre Swift joined in March. Roschon Johnson is a better blocker than Herbert, securing his spot on the roster. Additionally, Travis Homer contributes on special teams. The final factor was the team’s decision to move Velus Jones from wide receiver to running back. Not only is Jones their top kick returner, but he also finished the preseason with 158 yards on 25 carries. Herbert’s lack of versatility may no longer justify his spot on the roster, which is why the Bears could consider trading him to a team in need of a running back.
