Ja’Marr Chase has been pursuing a new contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, and it appears that negotiations between the two parties might be advancing.
Chase participated in team drills with the Bengals on Sunday, as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. This marked his first involvement in a team practice during training camp, having previously only engaged in individual workouts and walkthroughs. His participation suggests that he is unlikely to hold out during the regular season.
Currently in the fourth year of his rookie contract, Chase is set to play this season and next, with the Bengals having exercised his $21.8 million option for the following year. The franchise tag remains a potential option beyond that, but Chase is eager to secure a new deal now.
The wide receiver market was reset this offseason when Justin Jefferson signed a four-year, $140 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings, which included $110 million guaranteed—a record for non-quarterbacks. Chase has indicated that he views Jefferson’s deal as a key reference point in his own contract talks.
In just three NFL seasons, Chase has proven himself as one of the top wide receivers in the league, posting 100 receptions for 1,216 yards and 7 touchdowns last season despite Joe Burrow’s injury. It’s clear why Chase is seeking a top-tier contract, and he may be on the verge of achieving that aim.
