On Monday, it was revealed that the Minnesota Vikings will not be releasing veteran offensive lineman Dalton Risner. Instead, they will place him on injured reserve on Tuesday, before the 3 PM deadline for finalizing NFL rosters at 53 players.
Gabriel Murphy to be placed on Vikings’ injured reserve
This morning, it was announced who will fill the Vikings’ second short-term IR spot. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, it will be undrafted free agent EDGE rusher Gabriel Murphy.
The #Vikings will place promising UDFA LB Gabriel Murphy on short-term IR to begin the season, source said. The former UCLA standout flashed early in camp.

The UCLA alum wasn’t just an early favorite to make the roster; he was a focal point even before hitting the practice fields at TCO Performance Center. Skeptical? Consider this: many NFL Draft experts were astonished that Murphy was overlooked over 250 times in April. This is why the 23-year-old negotiated a substantial $245,000 in guaranteed money to sign with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent.
Gabe quickly lived up to his undrafted free agent hype during rookie mini camp and throughout Training Camp. Unfortunately, an injury has sidelined him for several weeks. Despite this, the Vikings clearly believe in his potential, as short-term IR designations are quite limited.
