The worst kept secret in Louisville was officially confirmed on Tuesday when the University of Louisville football program announced that wide receiver Ahmari Huggins-Bruce is returning to the team and will be eligible to play for the Cardinals in 2024.
Huggins-Bruce entered the transfer portal last December after Louisville’s loss to USC in the Holiday Bowl. He spent the spring and early part of fall camp with South Carolina.
During his three years at Louisville, Huggins-Bruce contributed significantly, recording 20 receptions for 312 yards and four touchdowns last season. Over his career with U of L, he accumulated 1,121 yards and 10 touchdowns on 80 catches.
As mentioned previously, I see no downside to this move. Players like Jadon Thompson, Cataurus Hicks, and Jahlil McClain will still have the first chance to prove themselves for Caullin Lacy’s spot. If they perform well over the next two weeks, we’re back to where we were before Huggins-Bruce left for South Carolina.
If they don’t perform, having Huggins-Bruce back is a clear advantage. He’s a proven player who can rejoin the team by late September and provide Tyler Shough with another downfield option. He has the speed, catching ability, and familiarity with the offense, making his return a straightforward decision.
With No. 9 already taken, Huggins-Bruce is expected to wear No. 24 for the Cardinals this season.
