The college football community is grieving this week following the sudden death of Iowa State icon Mike Stensrud at the age of 68.
According to his obituary, Stensrud passed away from a heart attack. Iowa State has confirmed the news and honored him as “one of the greatest defenders” in the school’s history.
A two-time All-Big Eight selection, Stensrud accumulated 360 tackles for the Cyclones and played a key role in their appearances at the Peach Bowl and Hall of Fame Bowl in 1977 and 1978.
In the NFL, Stensrud played for the Houston Oilers from 1979 to 1985, with brief tenures at the Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Kansas City Chiefs before ending his career with the Washington Redskins. Over his 11-year NFL career, he recorded 29.5 sacks and six fumble recoveries.
The Tennessee Titans, formerly the Oilers, expressed their condolences, stating, “The Tennessee Titans organization mourns the loss of longtime Oiler Mike Stensrud. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.” Stensrud was inducted into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000, a fitting tribute to his remarkable career.
Our thoughts are with Stensrud’s family and friends during this difficult time.
