More Injury Trouble for the Seahawks: Newly Acquired Player Injured After Trade

Injury concerns persist for Abraham Lucas, who missed a significant portion of last season due to what Pete Carroll described as a “chronic” issue. Although the Seahawks’ new medical team has downplayed that diagnosis, their starting right tackle is once again sidelined.

Lucas, who began his career as a starter alongside Charles Cross during their rookie season in 2022, has started all 22 games he’s played in. However, that included just six games last year. With Tuesday’s designation, Lucas is now required to miss at least four games. After undergoing knee surgery this offseason, Lucas also dealt with a shoulder problem as he prepared for his second year.

The Seahawks have re-signed George Fant, who served as a spot starter at right tackle for the Texans last season. With Lucas sidelined due to injury, Fant’s role on the team becomes even more crucial. Curtis, who was Fant’s primary competition for the position, was cut on Tuesday.

In a move that highlights a draft miss for GM John Schneider, the Seahawks are not retaining D’Wayne Eskridge. Eskridge, who was the Seahawks’ top pick in the 2021 draft—selected in the second round due to the Jamal Adams trade—has struggled to make an impact. The Western Michigan alum has only managed 17 catches for 122 yards in his career, with injuries hampering his progress. The Seahawks addressed their wide receiver concerns by drafting Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the first round last year, but they’ve had to invest significant resources into strengthening their WR corps.

Burns is expected to be a candidate for a return soon, according to ESPN.com’s Brady Henderson, who mentions that the former first-round pick had a strong training camp and even served as the team’s starting slot corner at times.

Additionally, the Seahawks released one of the players they recently acquired in a trade. Barrett, who was obtained from the Panthers, might be retained on the practice squad if he clears waivers on Wednesday.

Here is how the now-Mike Macdonald-led Seahawks reduced their roster to 53 players:
