NY Yankees Ignite $500M Bidding Battle with Cross-Town Rivals Heats Up. The New York Yankees have a major offseason goal: to secure superstar outfielder Juan Soto for the long term and pair him with fellow star Aaron Judge in their quest for championships.
However, the Yankees will face stiff competition from their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets, who are also keen to bring Soto from the Bronx to Queens. ESPN’s Jeff Passan suggests that the primary contenders for the 26-year-old outfielder will be the two New York teams.
Passan notes, “While teams like the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and both Los Angeles teams could theoretically afford Soto, they are considered unlikely to make a serious push. Seattle might be interested but could be deterred by the cost. Ultimately, the consensus among high-ranking executives and ownership is that Soto’s winter will come down to a showdown between the Yankees and Mets.”
The Yankees cannot afford to lose Soto in free agency
Juan Soto is having a stellar first season with the Yankees, setting a new career high in home runs with 37 before September and boasting a 1.027 OPS that trails only Aaron Judge in MLB. His presence has significantly boosted a lineup that lacked a second star alongside Judge last year.
With the Yankees currently holding the second-best record in MLB as they head into Tuesday, they are in a prime position to end their 15-year championship drought. However, losing Soto to the crosstown Mets would be a significant blow. The fans have shown their appreciation with chants of “Re-sign Soto!” during Sunday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.
While the Yankees have the financial resources to offer Soto a massive contract, they have also indicated a need to trim payroll eventually. As Soto is expected to secure one of the largest contracts in baseball history, potentially second only to Shohei Ohtani’s, his extension remains uncertain.
Other player’s contracts expiring may help the Yankees afford to bring back Soto
As the offseason approaches, the Yankees will see several significant contracts expire, which should help them afford a new deal for Juan Soto without straining their finances long-term. While this might mean losing other key players like Gleyber Torres and Clay Holmes, retaining Soto could make such sacrifices worthwhile.
With free agency still a few months away, speculation about Soto’s future will persist. As winter arrives, the Yankees and Mets are likely to engage in a fierce bidding war for this generational talent.
