Breaking: Yankees’ star confirms injury sustained in loss to Washington Nationals—who should step up?

The New York Yankees suffered their second consecutive defeat to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, resulting in another series loss to a sub-.500 team. The 5-2 loss reduced their lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East to just half a game, pending the outcome of the Orioles’ matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers later that night.

Aside from the newly acquired Chisholm, New York’s lineup lacks consistency beyond Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Giancarlo Stanton. Consequently, Boone frequently makes adjustments during crucial moments, as demonstrated by his decision to replace the struggling DJ LeMahieu with Oswaldo Cabrera in the top of the ninth inning on Wednesday.

“Yeah, I felt that was the right move at that moment,” Boone said. “I was also trying to keep the ball off the ground a bit more.”

LeMahieu, who is currently batting .202, has a ground ball rate of 53.7% this season, according to Baseball Savant. In comparison, the MLB average since 2015 is 44.5%. Cabrera, hitting .248 with eight home runs and 35 RBI, has provided more power this year.

The 25-year-old Cabrera showcased his ability again with a pinch-hit line drive that unfortunately was caught by Washington center fielder Jacob Young.

Nationals left-hander Mackenzie Gore, who has a 4.45 ERA and 1.55 WHIP, kept the Yankees to just two runs over six innings.

“He’s got a strong arm,” Boone acknowledged. “We know his potential. He managed to pitch deep into the game and did a good job getting them out of tricky spots.”

While struggling against average pitchers in August is concerning, continued poor performance could lead to a harsh reality check for New York.
