BREAKING NEWS: Eagles Secure Young and Promising Defensive Tackle

The Eagles claimed 23-year-old defensive tackle Byron Young off waivers on Thursday, a day after the Raiders released him.

Young was a 3rd-round pick by the Raiders last year, selected 70th overall. However, he played in only six games as a rookie, logging just 99 defensive snaps and 13 on special teams. Although he survived the Raiders’ initial cuts on Tuesday, he was unexpectedly released on Wednesday.

Since Young’s draft, the Raiders have undergone significant changes, with G.M. Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels being fired in November. Tom Telesco is now the GM, and Antonio Pierce is the head coach.

Notably, after Pierce was named interim head coach on November 1st, Young was inactive for all 10 games following the coaching change.

In a corresponding move, the Eagles released veteran defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu, a 2021 sixth-round pick who has appeared in 28 games over the last three seasons. Young is now the Eagles’ sixth interior defensive lineman, joining Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams, Moro Ojomo, and Thomas Booker.

Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 295 pounds, Young is the eighth former 3rd-round pick from another team that the Eagles have acquired since last year ended. Of these, three—Young, Oren Burks, and Zach Baun—are currently on the 53-man roster, two—Will Grier and Tyrion Davis-Price—are on the practice squad, and three—Julian Okwara, Terrell Lewis, and Matt Hennessy—are no longer with the team.

Young is also the sixth former Alabama player on the Eagles’ roster, joining Landon Dickerson, Eli Ricks, DeVonta Smith, and Tyler Steen. Jalen Hurts also played for Alabama before finishing his college career at Oklahoma.
