The Baltimore Orioles placed first baseman Ryan Mountcastle on the 10-day injured list on Monday due to a left wrist sprain, with the move retroactive to Friday. In response, the Orioles called up infielder Livan Soto from Triple-A Norfolk.
Mountcastle injured his wrist on Thursday while diving headfirst into second base during a game against the Houston Astros. He remained in the game until the ninth inning as the pain worsened.
The 27-year-old is hitting .265 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs in 118 games this season. Over parts of five seasons with Baltimore, Mountcastle has a .264 batting average, 91 home runs, and 326 RBIs in 557 appearances.
Soto, 24, played in one game for the Cincinnati Reds earlier this year before being traded to Baltimore in July. At Triple-A Norfolk, he has hit .325 with one home run and five RBIs in 12 games. In his major league career, Soto has a .358 batting average, going 24-for-67 with one home run and nine RBIs across 23 games for the Los Angeles Angels (2022-23) and the Reds.
