Longhorns Head Coach Gives Huge Injury Report As Starting RB Suffers Severe Injury In Practice

In recent weeks, the No. 4 Texas football team has managed to stay relatively injury-free as they wrap up their fall practices. Head coach Steve Sarkisian noted in a press conference earlier this week that no new injuries have emerged ahead of their season opener against the Colorado State Rams on August 31.

The game will begin at 2:30 p.m. CT at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin. Here’s a rundown of the injury report for Texas and Colorado State as they prepare for their Week 1 matchup:

For Texas, two scholarship running backs will be sidelined for the entire 2024 season due to lower-body injuries sustained during fall practice. Sophomore CJ Baxter Jr. is out after suffering a season-ending PCL tear early in camp. Baxter underwent successful knee surgery last week and is expected to return for the 2025 season. Last year, he ran for 659 yards and five touchdowns, with 24 receptions for 156 yards.

With Baxter unavailable, junior Jaydon Blue will start as the Longhorns’ primary running back. Blue recorded 398 rushing yards and three touchdowns last season, along with 14 catches for 135 yards and one touchdown.

True freshman Christian Clark will also miss the entire season due to a lower-body injury. Clark sustained a torn Achilles during a non-contact drill in preseason camp.

For Colorado State, redshirt sophomore defensive end Nuer Gatkuoth will be out for the season opener due to a turf toe injury. Gatkuoth’s absence is a significant blow to the Rams’ defense, as he is a key returning player in their front seven.

Sophomore tight end Jaxxon Warren, a 6-foot-8 JUCO transfer from Flower Mound, TX, will also miss the Texas game due to a shoulder injury sustained during fall camp.
