Texas Rangers Shake Up Roster On Sunday, the Texas Rangers expanded their roster to 28 players by calling up infielder Jonathan Ornelas and pitcher Owen White to the Major Leagues.
Both players, already on the 40-man roster, are available for the final game against the Oakland Athletics, meaning no corresponding roster move was necessary.
Owen White, a second-round pick by the Rangers in 2018 out of China Grove, N.C., has already made two appearances for the Rangers this season, posting a 54.00 ERA over just one inning, allowing six earned runs. His outings came in May, where he gave up three earned runs in each appearance, including one game where he couldn’t record an out. He made his MLB debut last year and had two relief appearances in that season as well.
In 25 games (15 starts) with Round Rock this year, White went 2-8 with a 5.15 ERA, recording 80 strikeouts and 44 walks. Recently, he’s transitioned into a relief role, and manager Bruce Bochy has brought him up to pitch in long relief. White mentioned that the shift to the bullpen, a discussion that’s been ongoing with the Rangers for the past year, suits his aggressive pitching style. “For now, I’m a reliever,” White said. “I do whatever they tell me to do.”
Ornelas, the Rangers’ third-round pick in 2018, has been with the team twice this season, last playing for Texas on July 26. He’s batting .150 across 11 games with 20 at-bats. Like White, he also made his MLB debut last season.
In Round Rock, Ornelas has slashed .251/.322/.326/.648, with three home runs and 29 RBI. Bochy plans to use Ornelas to give the veteran infielders some rest as the team enters the final month of the season.
