A long-term concern for the Tigers: Things are getting worse with Javier Baez’s season-ending injury

The Detroit Tigers haven’t seen a strong return on their investment in shortstop Javy Baez, and their situation could soon worsen.

Last week, the Tigers announced that Baez would undergo season-ending arthroscopic knee surgery. While one might assume that he’d be ready for spring training, that’s not a certainty.

Javier Baez’s season-ending injury could be long-term issue?

Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports that the Tigers aren’t sure if Baez will be fully recovered by next spring. The timeline for recovery could range from 12 weeks to an entire year, depending on the surgery’s outcome. Details about who will perform the procedure or its severity remain unclear, but the worst-case scenario could keep Baez sidelined into 2025.

This injury further complicates Baez’s future with the Tigers. Since signing a six-year, $140 million contract before the 2022 season, Baez has struggled, batting just .221 with 32 home runs. The 2024 season has been his worst yet, with a .184 average and only six home runs.
