In March, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded a conditional sixth-round pick to the Chicago Bears for quarterback Justin Fields, who was once the 11th overall draft pick. This seemed like a bargain for such a highly drafted player just three years ago.
The Bears decided to move on from Fields, sending him to Pittsburgh. According to Bears insider Bill Zimmerman of Windy City Gridiron, head coach Matt Eberflus ultimately “didn’t trust” the former Ohio State quarterback. Zimmerman noted that many people within and around the team believe Eberflus made several questionable decisions because he lacked confidence in Fields’ ability to make the right plays. For instance, on third-and-6 from the opponent’s 30-yard line, Eberflus preferred running the ball and settling for a field goal rather than risking a turnover or a sack that could push them out of field-goal range.
When teams play not to lose, they often end up losing. This insight makes us eager to see Fields in an offense that trusts and believes in his talents. Sometimes, a change of scenery can revive a player’s struggling career.
However, as the Steelers prepare for the regular season, Fields is currently serving as the backup to veteran Russell Wilson, unless a specific “Fields Package” is implemented.
