Marko Reveals Red Bull’s Sacrificial Strategy for Verstappen’s Title Bid:

Helmut Marko "recognizes" the work of Checo Perez: "He has the talent of the century as a teammate" | Marca

– Helmut Marko has revealed that Red Bull is prepared to forgo the constructors’ championship if it means Max Verstappen clinches the drivers’ title.
– Recent races have seen Red Bull’s performance dip, with Verstappen labeling the car as “undriveable” and a “monster” after a sixth-place finish at the Italian Grand Prix.
– Despite these setbacks, Verstappen only lost eight points to Lando Norris, maintaining a 62-point lead in the championship. Norris, who had started from pole, finished third but secured the fastest lap.
– McLaren’s MCL38 is currently the quickest car on the grid, while Red Bull struggles with the balance of the RB20. If Verstappen were to lose the title, it would be the biggest points lead overturned in F1 history.
– Red Bull currently leads McLaren by eight points in the constructors’ standings, but Marko has stressed that the primary focus is on securing Verstappen’s drivers’ championship.
– Marko noted, “Even with our recent struggles, Max remains 62 points ahead of Norris in the drivers’ standings.”
– He added, “If we don’t provide Max with a manageable car and continue to have performances like the Italian Grand Prix, the championship could slip away.”
– Regarding Sergio Perez’s performance, Marko admitted that while Perez isn’t performing poorly, he’s simply slower than Verstappen, highlighting the team’s emphasis on Verstappen’s title chase.
– “Our top priority is for Max to win the drivers’ championship, even if it means sacrificing the constructors’ title,” Marko concluded.
