Rays Retain Standout Pitcher Erasmo Ramírez has agreed to join Triple-A Durham after being outrighted by the Rays. Tampa Bay had designated the veteran long reliever for assignment late last week.
Rays Retain Standout Pitcher. This marks Ramírez’s second DFA of the year. The Rays had previously placed him on waivers in late May, keeping him in Durham until August 26. After briefly bringing him back to the major leagues, where he pitched in two games, Tampa Bay removed him from the roster again. Ramírez had a strong first outing, pitching two scoreless innings against the Mariners, but struggled in his second appearance, allowing two runs and issuing four walks over 2 2/3 innings against the Padres.
Throughout the season, Ramírez has pitched 20 2/3 innings in 13 low-leverage relief appearances, with a 4.35 ERA, a below-average 17.6% strikeout rate, and a high 11.8% walk rate. However, he’s performed well with Durham, recording a 3.02 ERA with impressive strikeout (28.6%) and walk (6.5%) rates over 47 2/3 innings.
Ramírez seems to have a good rapport with the Rays, having signed with them multiple times and accepting two outright assignments. He’ll remain with Durham for the rest of the season and will become a free agent at the end of the year. The 34-year-old is expected to seek another minor league contract in the upcoming offseason.
