The team has won six of its last seven games and is above .500 for the first time since June 13, 2019. With Sunday’s victory over Dallas, the Fever improved to 17-16, breaking a WNBA-record streak of 189 games without a winning record, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Indiana secured its first playoff berth since 2016 after both Chicago and Atlanta lost on Tuesday night. The Fever currently sit sixth in the standings.
Mitchell is one of the few players remaining from the Fever’s difficult years; she joined the team in 2018 and had never won more than 13 games in a season until this year.
“I know what it feels like to be at the bottom, and I don’t want to go back there,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell has scored over 20 points in all seven games since returning from the nearly monthlong break for the Paris Games. She’s averaging 28.3 points during this stretch, the second-highest in the league behind A’ja Wilson. Overall, Mitchell is having her best scoring season, averaging 19 points. She was Indiana’s top scorer last season with an 18.2 points per game average.
“Kelsey has been playing fantastic basketball. Having that 1-2 combo in the backcourt with her makes my life easier,” Clark said. “It’s a lot of fun to play this way, especially with our fast-paced style.”
Mitchell agrees, enjoying her partnership with Clark, who leads the league with 8.4 assists per game.
“I think Caitlin and I, along with our team, have found our rhythm,” Mitchell said. “Our pace is what sets us apart from many other teams. We like to push the ball up and down the court quickly, and it really enhances our game.”
The Fever now face six straight home games, starting Wednesday against the last-place Los Angeles Sparks, before concluding the regular season at Washington.
