Spartans Shift Gears: New Leadership Steers Michigan State into Maryland Showdown

Spartans Shift Gears. Michigan State and Maryland each secured season-opening victories last week, albeit through different paths. Both teams are now gearing up for an early Big Ten showdown as the Spartans (1-0) travel to face the Terrapins (1-0) in College Park, Maryland, on Saturday.

Spartans Shift Gears as they claimed a 16-10 win over Florida Atlantic at home, despite a sloppy performance that featured three turnovers and 12 penalties for 140 yards.

This game marked the debut of Jonathan Smith as head coach and Aidan Chiles as quarterback for the Spartans. Chiles struggled in his first game, completing just 10 of 24 passes for 114 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. Smith noted that Chiles was in better spirits during Monday’s practice, acknowledging the need for growth and learning from the previous game.

Michigan State: What we learned, what to watch at Maryland

Chiles will now face a Maryland defense that forced three turnovers in a dominant 50-7 victory over UConn last Saturday. That game also settled Maryland’s quarterback question, with Billy Edwards Jr. emerging as the starter. Edwards, a redshirt junior with three previous career starts, impressed by completing 20 of 27 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns without any turnovers.

Head coach Michael Locksley praised Edwards’ calm leadership, which has positively influenced the team. Maryland has won the last two matchups against Michigan State, including a 31-9 victory last season, though the Spartans hold a 10-4 lead in the series dating back to 1944.
