“He’s past the initial phase of rehab where we needed to be vigilant about his medical care around the clock,” O’Connell explained. “Now he’s back in meetings every day with Sam [Darnold] and the other quarterbacks.”

O’Connell noted that McCarthy’s off-field qualities are becoming more evident during his recovery and encouraged him to build on the progress he’s made in a short time.

“Keep building on what you’ve achieved here, even though you won’t be on the field this year, which is probably frustrating for him,” O’Connell said. “But we know there’s a lot of valuable time ahead for him to really start strong when we finally get him back out there.”

O’Connell also mentioned that McCarthy has been actively moving around the Vikings’ facility in a motorized cart.

“He’s been zooming around the building,” O’Connell joked. “He did crash it into my office wall yesterday. No injuries, just a bit of damage from the cart.”

McCarthy will miss his entire rookie season following surgery in August for an injury sustained during the preseason. The Vikings selected him 10th overall in April.
