The Minnesota Vikings are set to start their season this Sunday in New York against the Giants at noon, but they’ll be missing a key offensive player. Star tight end T.J. Hockenson will not be available as he’s still listed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.
In the meantime, the Vikings have been active off the field, restructuring Hockenson’s contract to free up some much-needed cap space.
Acquired from the Detroit Lions during the 2022-23 season, Hockenson has become an essential component of the Vikings’ offense. He signed a four-year, $66 million extension in August 2023, keeping him with the team through the 2027-28 season.
According to Dane Mizutani of the Pioneer Press, the Vikings made a minor adjustment to Hockenson’s contract. Although his overall compensation remains unchanged, some of the funds have been reallocated to provide the team with additional cap flexibility. Before this adjustment, the Vikings had limited salary cap space, with only about $900,000 available, as reported by OverTheCap.
This restructuring gives the Vikings more leeway to make further moves this season. Hockenson’s $14 million cap hit for 2024 will be reduced, but he will not lose any of the money he was originally scheduled to receive.
