Latest Update: The Justin Fields Saga In Pittsburgh Has Taken Another Wild Swerve

For the past five decades, quarterback drama has been a rarity for the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, this off-season has been different. The Chicago Bears traded Justin Fields to Pittsburgh for a conditional pick as a favor, since Fields wanted to join a more stable organization where he could compete for the starting role. Initially, many doubted his chances against Russell Wilson, a seven-time Pro Bowler, who had just signed with the Steelers before Fields’ arrival.

Training camp took a surprising turn when Wilson was sidelined by injury, allowing Fields to exceed expectations during practice. Some even believed he might claim the starting role. But after a shaky performance in the preseason opener, Wilson regained the job and was named team captain, seemingly closing the door on Fields.

Yet, just days before the season opener, the situation shifted again. Wilson’s calf injury flared up, putting his availability for Sunday in doubt, and Fields is now expected to start. If Fields can lead Pittsburgh to a victory against Atlanta, he may secure the starting role long-term. Contrary to popular belief, the Steelers have no contractual obligation to play Wilson, who signed a minimum deal. Fields, on the other hand, has stayed healthy and earned respect within the organization. A strong performance against Atlanta, a team he dominated last season, could cement his role as the starter.

This scenario could benefit both Pittsburgh and Chicago, as Fields playing 51% of the offensive snaps this season would guarantee the Bears a fourth-round pick in 2025.
