BREAKING NEWS: Braves Ofiicially Acquire Another Sensational Baseman On A Long Term Deal

The Braves have acquired infielder Cavan Biggio from the Giants, as reported by Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. According to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Giants are receiving cash considerations in exchange for Biggio, who was on a minor league contract and thus eligible to be traded despite the trade deadline having passed. Since Biggio was acquired after the start of September, he will be ineligible for the postseason with the Braves.

Biggio, 29, was selected by the Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 2016 draft and made his MLB debut in 2019. Initially seen as a key part of Toronto’s young talent pool, he had a strong start, hitting .234/.364/.429 (115 wRC+) in his rookie season, finishing fifth in the Rookie of the Year voting, ahead of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Biggio continued to perform well in the shortened 2020 season, appearing in 59 of 60 games and posting a career-best 122 wRC+.

However, Biggio’s performance declined over the following two seasons. He struggled offensively, batting .213/.320/.353 (91 wRC+) over 597 plate appearances, with a rising strikeout rate of 27.3% and reduced power, hitting only 13 home runs combined in 2021 and 2022. By late 2022, he was demoted to the minors as Santiago Espinal took over as the regular second baseman.

Braves acquire Cavan Biggio in minor-league trade with Giants

Biggio showed some improvement last season, posting a 102 wRC+ in 111 games while playing a versatile role across several positions. Despite this, his performance deteriorated again in 2024, as he hit just .200/.323/.291 with a 32.1% strikeout rate in 44 games before being designated for assignment by the Blue Jays in early June. He was traded to the Dodgers but struggled there as well, hitting .192/.306/.329 before being released in August. He then joined the Giants on a minor league deal, but did not make a big league appearance with them before this trade.

Now with the Braves, Biggio becomes their latest injury replacement. The team has had to adapt to numerous injuries this season, bringing in players like Ramon Laureano, John Brebbia, Whit Merrifield, and Gio Urshela. Biggio’s acquisition comes as a result of Merrifield’s recent foot injury, which might keep him out for a short period. Given that Biggio’s offensive output, despite his recent struggles, would still be an upgrade over current infield options like Luke Williams and Eli White, his ability to draw walks provides a stable offensive floor.

Biggio’s addition will require a move to fit him onto the Braves’ 40-man roster, which is currently full.
