Football season has officially kicked off, but in just over a month, we’ll be gearing up for Michigan State basketball. The Spartans will begin their season with an exhibition game in Northern Michigan against Tom Izzo’s alma mater, followed by a two-week break before their next exhibition match.
On Tuesday, Michigan State released its 2024-25 non-conference basketball schedule, and it promises to be as challenging as ever. The two exhibition games will provide a good measure of the team’s progress since their 2-1 record during their trip to Spain against professional teams.
The regular season starts on November 3 at home against Monmouth. Following that, the Spartans will face Monmouth and Niagara before participating in the annual Champions Classic on November 12, where they’ll go up against Kansas instead of the usual Duke or Kentucky. The Jayhawks are expected to be strong contenders for the national title, making this a formidable matchup.
After the Champions Classic, Michigan State will play Tum Tum Nairn and Bowling Green on November 16, followed by Samford on November 19. These games will serve as a lead-up to the Maui Invitational in Hawaii, starting November 25. In the first round, the Spartans will face Colorado, and in the second round, they’ll meet either UConn or Memphis. The final games, whether for the title, third place, or fifth place, will be against North Carolina, Auburn, Iowa State, or Dayton.
Non-conference play will resume about three weeks later, with a game against Oakland at Little Caesars Arena after a couple of conference games, followed by matches against FAU and Western Michigan before diving into Big Ten action.
This non-conference schedule is shaping up to be a tough one, as usual.
