Former 5-star recruit emerging as the powerhouse of Alabama’s defense

Arriving at the University of Alabama as a five-star recruit in the 2022 class, New Jersey native Jihaad Campbell is emerging as a key defensive force for the Crimson Tide.

Now a junior inside linebacker, Campbell leads the team with 20 total tackles and 14 solo tackles through two games. He showcased his versatility and playmaking ability against Western Kentucky and South Florida, flying all over the field and nearly securing an interception against the Bulls.

His contributions have helped Alabama’s defense allow just one touchdown this season, with the team averaging only eight points allowed per game. Campbell has also recorded 2.5 tackles for loss, half a sack, and a pass breakup.

Despite South Florida finding some success in the run game with quarterback Byrum Brown, Campbell was a standout performer, racking up 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, half a sack, and a breakup in Alabama’s 42-16 win. His aggressive mindset and determination have impressed the coaching staff, especially Alabama’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.

“Jihaad is an incredibly talented athlete,” Wommack said on Monday. “But more importantly, he plays linebacker the way it’s meant to be played—relentless pursuit of the ball with a high motor, great energy, and intensity. His effort and finishing ability, going from point A to point B with violent intentions, is exactly what we emphasize. I’m proud of his effort, and it’s no surprise he’s leading the team in tackles after two games.”

Campbell will bring his enforcer mentality to Camp Randall Stadium this Saturday as Alabama faces Wisconsin.
